Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Clinical Skills Lab

hands-on skills training is designed for sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs), Forensic Nurse Examiners (FNEs), or other providers of medical forensic care who are looking to increase their knowledge and improve their skills providing post-assault care to adult and adolescent patients. Attendees of the lab will practice skills including evidence collection, speculum exams, forensic photography, obtaining informed consent, and more. 

  • When: November 25th – 26th, 2024,
    0800 – 1700 both days
  • Where: Hennepin Healthcare Simulation Center, 600 Park Ave,
    Minneapolis, MN 55415
  • Cost: $600 (see below for info on registration fee reimbursement)
  • Eligibility: You must be a licensed Registered Nurse and have completed a 40-hour didactic SANE course. 2 years of clinical experience is recommended. 

Registration Fee Reimbursement: Re LAB at the University of Minnesota runs a HRSA-funded program to support forensic nurses, and can financially support your participation in this training if eligible. The first step in this process is to complete this application form to become a Re LAB member. The form to request reimbursement approval can be found here.  Membership and reimbursement applications must be completed and processed a minimum of 2 weeks before the training date; processing can take up to 10 days. If you have questions or difficulty with the grant process, please direct your emails to Lexy Lipsh relab@umn.edu. If your organization/employer has paid for your spot and requires reimbursement, the process of applying for Re LAB support needs to be completed by you, not by your organization/employer.

40-Hour Didactic
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
Course – Adult/Adolescent

This 40 hour Adult/Adolescent Didactic Course provides SANEs the foundational knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to provide holistic, comprehensive care to adult and adolescent patients that have experienced sexual assault.

Participants from across the Midwest will the have the opportunity to network and learn alongside other nurses while under the expert instruction of many Minnesota-based presenters, including SANE program managers, law enforcement, advocacy, victim-survivors, an attorney, forensic scientist and more.

When: October 21st-25th, 2024. 0800-1730, daily
Where: Anderson Center Room 305, Hamline University, 1536 Hewitt Avenue,
St. Paul, MN
Cost: $350 (see registration form for more info on reimbursement)
Eligibility: Licensed Registered Nurse, two years of clinical practice
recommended but not mandatory.

Deepen your SANE skills through interactive wound documentation
and sensitive exam workshops.
Learn more about how to identify, document, and photograph wounds through
an interactive workshop, and then practice those skills on working with
Patient Educators with diverse skin tones with simulated wounds.

Complete sensitive exams with skilled Patient Educators, trained to teach these
skills with their bodies to medical professionals.  Exams include Breast, Chest,
Pelvic (speculum).

Prerequisites for Participation: Completion of a 40-hour didactic SANE-A course and a SANE-A clinical skills lab.
NOTE: SANE-A clinical skills lab requirement can be waived for those currently working as a SANE-A.

Eligibility for the Clinical Skills labs: Licensed Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Physician, or Physician Assistant with two years of clinical practice (recommended). Completion of a 40-hour didactic SANE class.

This hands-on 16 hour skills trainings is designed for sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) or Forensic Nurse Examiners (FNEs) who are looking to increase their knowledge and improve their skills providing post-assault care to adult and adolescent patients. Attendees of the lab will practice skills including evidence collection, speculum exams, forensic photography, obtaining informed consent, and more.

These nursing continuing professional development activities were approved by the Emergency Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The notice provided to sexual assault victims by hospitals has been updated.

The English version of the notice is available in PDF and Word formats on the Professional Resources page of the OJP website.  Spanish, Somali, and Hmong versions areavailable too.

The notice to sexual assault victims was created in 2014 and updated in 2018 following a change in the law. Legislation that passed in 2020 has changed the kit testing landscape significantly, requiring another update of the notice. In particular, the new law requires the following:

  1. All unrestricted kits will be tested.
  2. All restricted kits will be sent to the BCA.
  3. The BCA must develop a statewide tracking system of sexual assault examination kits.
