The training is 40 hours of classroom training following the International Association of Forensic Nurses guidelines.

Materials will be available for download prior to the training and a flash drive of training and reference material will be provided on the first day.

This activity has been submitted to the Emergency Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. The Emergency Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation

Instructors:

Barbara Kern-Pieh, RN, MSN, CNM, SANE-A, SANE-P
Barb is currently the Coordinator for the Sexual Assault Resource Service (SARS) at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis. As a Nurse-Midwife, Barb has delivered babies, provided prenatal care and mostly provided reproductive care for women and teens at clinics in the metropolitan area.  During her clinic hours, Barb also trained SANE examiners in the fine art and science of pelvic exam and genital evaluation. Ten years ago Barb became a SANE-A and is an examiner for patients who presented for care following sexual assault.  In 2010 Barb became certified SANE-P, and has developed the SANE-P team within SARS.  Barb will instruct attendees of this course on the genital evaluation and use of speculums to promote confidence in the examiner, and comfort for the patient.
Kristi Jarvis, BS, RN, SANE-A, EMT-B
Kristi is a SANE-A at both the Regions Hospital SANE program in St. Paul and the HCMC SARS program in Minneapolis.  She also works as a Research Nurse at the Minneapolis VA Hospital. She has been with Regions since 2011 and HCMC since 2013.  She received her Associate of Science degree in Nursing prior to focusing on her career in Forensic Nursing, after which she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice followed by a Graduate Certificate in Forensic Nursing.  Kristi started her career in the field of medicine as an Emergency Medical Technician where she worked on a rural ambulance service in northern Minnesota for almost ten years.  She serves as a member on the Ramsey County multidisciplinary sexual assault protocol team as well as the statewide human trafficking task force.  Kristi is the current President of the Minnesota Chapter of the IAFN. She has presented at the local and national level, and is very passionate about this field.

Course Objectives:

  1. Become familiar with speculum and anoscope options and demonstrate ability to choose appropriate instrument needed specific to patient & exam
  2. Demonstrate proper insertion technique appropriate for the patient and exam needs
  3. Describe various patient positions used for conducting exams
  4. Explain method(s) for collecting evidence (and number of swabs per site) while conducting speculum and anoscope exams
  5. Adequately identify anogenital anatomy
  6. Demonstrate accurate documentation of anogenital injury using appropriate forensic terminology

Expert Testimony Institute July 16-17 Grand Rapids, MN SVJI @ MNCASA is hosting an Expert Testimony Institute in Grand Rapids, MN on July 16-17, 2012. The Institute is for prosecutors, experienced healthcare providers who are directly involved in the sexual assault exam, and highly experienced sexual assault advocates who are interested in being called as an expert to testify in adult criminal sexual conduct cases. The Sexual Violence Justice Institute (SVJI), a special program of the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault, is pleased to announce the receipt of a grant from the State of Minnesota’s Office of Justice Programs.  The Expert Testimony Resources Project is designed to increase the use and effectiveness of expert testimony in criminal sexual conduct cases and increase the collaboration between healthcare professionals, prosecutors and victim advocates.  At the conclusion of this project, these professionals will better understand the tools available to vigorously prosecute these cases and more victims will benefit from a victim-centered response. SANE Adult/Adolescent and Pediatric Training

Become trained in either Adult/Adolescent or both Adult/Adolescent and Pediatric Protocol.

Training Details
Cost for the Adult/Adolescent four-day training is $350.00.
Cost for the Adult/Adolescent and Pediatric Combined six-day training is $450.00.
This training will require homework to be completed prior to and during the training.
Prior to training, participants will need to review the Sexual Assault – Forensic & Clinical Management DVD practicum, provided by PAVSA in the cost of training.
The training will be held at Essentia Health Hermantown Clinic, Hermantown, MN.
