SANE Clinical Skills Lab

Have you taken the 40 hour SANE course but still need experience performing medical forensic exams for adult/adolescent sexual assault patients?  If so, this 16 hour IAFN Clinical Skills Lab November 5 and 6, 2016 is for you.

This 16 hour Clinical Skills Lab will provide the nurse hands on Sexual Assault Examination training with live models.  The Skills lab includes training and practice on pelvic speculum insertion, interviewing, evidence collection and handling, anoscopy, and photography.  The Skills Lab will provide training and practice with developing a plan of care, discharge/safety planning, and risk assessment for STI’s, pregnancy, and HIV with discussions regarding options for prophylaxis of each.  This Clinical Skills Lab is designed to provide clinical practice to nurses who are new SANEs or SANEs who have not had the opportunity to perform many exams.  The Skills Lab will increase the nurse’s skill and confidence with performing medical forensic examination of the adult and adolescent sexual assault patient.

Skills Lab Dates/times: Saturday and Sunday- November 5 and 6, 0800-1700.

Limited scholarships for this training may be available through the Office for Victims of Crime for SANEs who work directly with crime victims.  Awards will be made based on need, to applicants whose organizations have insufficient funds to support their participation.  Please visit the OVC TTAC Web site to print out the application.   (Mail it, or email it, or fax it by October 1, but do not apply online because the official deadline is 60 days prior to the course.  OVC has made a special exception for us for this skills lab.) When filling out the application emphasize your experience working with crime victims.  This experience can be in your regular positions or volunteer work.

If scholarships are awarded participants could be reimbursed for expenses up to $1000.  SANEs should not wait for a response to their scholarship application to register and pay for the course since it will likely be filled by then
