This 16-hour Adult/Adolescent Clinical Skills Lab will provide Registered Nurses with the hands-on training needed to support their role as SANE. Our lab utilizes live models to assist learners in development of new skills like speculum insertion, history-taking, forensic photography, evidence collection and trauma-informed communication. The skills lab will provide training and practice with developing a plan of care, discharge/safety planning, and risk assessment for STI’s, pregnancy, and HIV with discussions regarding options for prophylaxis of each. This skills lab is also designed to provide clinical practice to nurses who are employed as SANEs in areas with low exam volumes and desire to maintain proficiency in exam components. The skills lab will increase the nurse’s skill and confidence with performing medical forensic examination of the adult and adolescent sexual assault patient.
