We encounter youth who have experienced sexual assault and/or who may be at risk for sexual exploitation. Learn how to identify these youth and the services available for them.

Words matter. Laurel will discuss ways to promote resiliency in youth during our interactions and to build on their strengths. She will discuss the benefits of trauma informed approaches and the importance of follow up that leads to lifetime health benefits. Come and learn from a leader in the field and to join in the discussion.

CEUs Reproductive Health Forum

The Nucleus Clinic has partnered with Public Health to bring education surrounding reproductive health to the north metro. This forum covers a number of topics surrounding the topics of protecting, promoting, and improving the health of reproductive-age women and their partners.

Instructors:

Barbara Kern-Pieh, RN, MSN, CNM, SANE-A, SANE-P
Barb is currently the Coordinator for the Sexual Assault Resource Service (SARS) at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis. As a Nurse-Midwife, Barb has delivered babies, provided prenatal care and mostly provided reproductive care for women and teens at clinics in the metropolitan area.  During her clinic hours, Barb also trained SANE examiners in the fine art and science of pelvic exam and genital evaluation. Ten years ago Barb became a SANE-A and is an examiner for patients who presented for care following sexual assault.  In 2010 Barb became certified SANE-P, and has developed the SANE-P team within SARS.  Barb will instruct attendees of this course on the genital evaluation and use of speculums to promote confidence in the examiner, and comfort for the patient.
Kristi Jarvis, BS, RN, SANE-A, EMT-B
Kristi is a SANE-A at both the Regions Hospital SANE program in St. Paul and the HCMC SARS program in Minneapolis.  She also works as a Research Nurse at the Minneapolis VA Hospital. She has been with Regions since 2011 and HCMC since 2013.  She received her Associate of Science degree in Nursing prior to focusing on her career in Forensic Nursing, after which she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice followed by a Graduate Certificate in Forensic Nursing.  Kristi started her career in the field of medicine as an Emergency Medical Technician where she worked on a rural ambulance service in northern Minnesota for almost ten years.  She serves as a member on the Ramsey County multidisciplinary sexual assault protocol team as well as the statewide human trafficking task force.  Kristi is the current President of the Minnesota Chapter of the IAFN. She has presented at the local and national level, and is very passionate about this field.

Course Objectives:

  1. Become familiar with speculum and anoscope options and demonstrate ability to choose appropriate instrument needed specific to patient & exam
  2. Demonstrate proper insertion technique appropriate for the patient and exam needs
  3. Describe various patient positions used for conducting exams
  4. Explain method(s) for collecting evidence (and number of swabs per site) while conducting speculum and anoscope exams
  5. Adequately identify anogenital anatomy
  6. Demonstrate accurate documentation of anogenital injury using appropriate forensic terminology

Expand your forensic skills with our July Education on Elder Abuse.
Colleen Schmitt will discuss the different forms of elder abuse, ways to identify
victims and services available for elders. Karine Zakroczymski will share the
Allina Program Elder Abuse documentation form and discuss tips for
documentation from the Forensic Nurses point of view. We will time for
discussion on how we can better serve our elderly abuse victims.
